What "500 lbs usable" actually means

Most kayak manufacturers publish a maximum weight number that's really the float capacity — the point where the boat would start taking on water if it were a closed shell. That number is misleading because every accessory — the seat, the rudder, your battery, your cooler — eats into the float number before you even get on board.

Cajo publishes the more conservative number: the load at which the scuppers still self-bail with the kayak fully rigged out of the box. 500 lbs is what you have to work with after the boat's stock seat and rudder are already on board.

The 500 lb number is keyed to the scupper height above the waterline at rest. Stay under it and the scuppers drain water out of the cockpit. Push past it and you'll start to see water pooling at the foot wells. The boat still floats well past 500 lbs — it just stops being a dry boat to fish from.

Practical math for an angler

Picture an average load on the Outpost 128:

Freeboard: 8–9 inches

Freeboard is the distance from the waterline up to the top edge of the hull (the gunwale) — the practical answer to "how wet am I going to get?" Higher freeboard means the boat sheds chop and spray over the side instead of into your lap.

At 8–9", the Outpost 128 has enough freeboard to handle:

  • Inshore saltwater chop in the 1–2 ft range
  • Light wind-driven waves on big lakes and reservoirs
  • Wake from passing pontoons and small powerboats
  • Coastal trolling in protected bays

It's not a deep-V offshore boat — no kayak is — but 8–9" is on the higher end of the sit-on-top fishing kayak category, well above flat-deck inflatables and SUPs.

Freeboard drops as you add weight. A light angler load (180 lbs angler plus minimal gear) rides closer to the 9" end. A heavy load near the 500 lb scupper threshold rides closer to the 8" end — that's true of every sit-on-top, not a Cajo-specific concern, just physics. Even at 500 lbs of usable capacity, the Outpost 128 is still riding above scupper height, which is the whole point of how Cajo publishes capacity numbers.

The Terra 116 and Outpost 100 sit a touch lower in the water at comparable loads — they're shorter, lighter boats — but the Outpost 128 has the most freeboard buffer of the rigid line.

Electronics pod: 4.3" wide x 13.4" long x 6.75" high

The pod is the dedicated dry storage for your battery, fish finder wiring, fuse panel, and any small electronics that need to live below deck. If you're planning to run a trolling motor, fish finder, or aerator, this is the space you're working with.

A few common batteries and what they look like in the pod:

  • Amped Outdoors 30Ah LiFePO4 (tall): fits on its side — confirmed
  • Amped Outdoors 20Ah: plenty of room either orientation
  • Dakota Lithium 18Ah: fits comfortably
  • Group U1 lead-acid (~7.5" x 5" x 7"): tight on width — check your specific battery's footprint against the 4.3" pod width

Always confirm your specific battery's dimensions before ordering. Battery cases vary a few tenths of an inch between manufacturers, and the pod is purpose-built — there isn't much room to spare on the width axis.

Alongside the battery, the pod also holds fuse holders and inline fuses (tucked against the sidewall), bus bars or junction blocks (in the unused length space), excess wire runs (coiled and zip-tied to the floor), and fish finder transducer cables (routed through the cable gland on the pod lid).

If you're trying to run a battery bigger than roughly 30Ah in a standard form factor, you'll outgrow this pod. Your options: use a smaller LiFePO4 — 30Ah is plenty for most kayak setups (12+ hours of continuous trolling motor use at low speed) — add an external battery box behind the seat for big rigs, or wire two smaller batteries in parallel.
